I noticed the other day that my left rear axle seal is leaking. Could someone tell me what is involved in R&R the seal and will I have to press any bearings off the axle shaft?

Is is pouring oil or just getting the rim "wet"?

Could be nothing more than over lubing the grease fitting for the bearing.

It is clear hyd oil more so when the tractor is leaning to the left. I checked the tran and it isnt over full.

My dealer here in NC said that there was a problem on the 555 with a "clamp" that held a "boot" in the axle area that was installed wrong. Sorry but that's all that I can tell you.

Check to make sure where the leak is. On my 545 the bolts holding the brake housing to the axle housing came loose and oil leaked onto the rim from that joint. Fortunately I caught it before something broke.

You said you checked the transmission level, did you also check the rear center housing/hydraulic oil level? They are different than the transmission level. The hydraulic oil level is checked by a plug on the right side of the rear center housing just above the tractor foot board. It has threads that you can see. There is also a bolt near this plug that does not have exposed threads. Do not loosen the bolt by mistake---only the plug!

I will check the rear housing oil level. Thanks for the info.

555 s have wet disc brakes. I have found that some tractors drip oil from the adjusting screws on the back side of the brake housings. The cure is to remove the adjusting screw and apply some sealer like RTV or RIGHT STUFF.
