Farmtrac 270DTC
270DTC has 27 HP engine
300DTC has 30 HP engine
320DTC has 32 HP engine
330HST has 33 HP engine

and the 360DTC... 39 HP, of course.

Can anyone explain why it isn't called a 390DTC?

Because there is a already a 390, it is the hydrostatic model whereas the 360DTC is the gear drive.

As you know, the 39 horse Mitsubishi powered hydrostatic unit that you are referring to is the 390HST. I would think that the 39 horse gear driven unit powered by the same Mitsubishi powerplant would simply be called the 390DTC.

390HST = 39 horse w/hydrostatic transmission
390DTC = (one would assume) 39 horse gear driven

Instead they call the 39 horse gear driven unit the 360DTC. No big deal, I suppose. However, the inconsistency when compared to the other Farmtrac compact models (see my original post) may lead one to believe that it is powered by a 36 HP engine. My dealer thought this was the case, until he dug deeper.

What I find especially interesting (read questionable) is that both models spec out with equal HP at the PTO (33). I would have thought that the hydrostatic transmission would steal more power from the PTO than the gear driven unit.

I have pondered this apparent faux pas of the FarmTrac marketing department. I think they should call the 39 HP gear model the 390DTC and the hydro the 360HST. This would make all things right in the universe as the power robbing characteristics of the hydro tranny would be evident in the model number.

I have just purchased a 2003 model year 360DTC. The owner's manual says that this tractor has 36 HP. It also states that the 300DTC has 28HP. There is no mention of an HSTmodel. I'm thinking that maybe there wasn't one yet. Could it be that in 2003 that engine (same displacement etc. etc.) made only 36HP. By the time Farmtrac got around to making an HST model, the engine had been tweaked to get 39HP. So they called it the 390HST, but didn't want to change the name of the existing model so it remained the 360DTC.

Just a theory....

Kind of like what happened to the John Deere 790 only in reverse. Older models were 30 HP, Now they are only 27HP. because of EPA restrictions.

That issue with the 360/390 HST horsepower vs. the 360 gear hp has came up in the past. Seems FarmTrac made it confusing all by themselves.

Sorry, I don't know how to just post a question without replying to someone elses post. I just purchased a 360DTC. The previous owner didn't have the owners manual. I've got a warning light lit on the dash that is like a round gear with a oil drop in the center. Does anyone know what my tractor is trying to tell me??

Paul when you go to the forum "All Other Brands" (that this post is in) Above all the topics is a "New Thread" button- on the left-click that too start a new topic.

I don't know what your light means--Sorry.
