This is where the pic in the last post drains around the side of the house. I've fixed this area and re-seeded a couple times already. If you look close you can see the down spouts on the house are buried. Each one goes into a ~50' long 2' deep french drain.

Once this gets established it should be ok.

In summary once the grass gets going around the house and shop everything will be roses. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The real trouble area is the culvert and water way that drains into the terrace. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Try some wheat, its germinates quickly and is a lot cheaper than grass seed. I have used it on high erosion areas with good success. When it has sprouted, cast some annual rye in amongst the wheat. You can mow the wheat down or leave it to feed the critters.

Check with your local Ag office or University extension office. They have info about this kind of stuff available, and usually have people who can recomend solutions.

How about some bales of straw staked down to slow the speed of the water? You could put these every 20' or so, or even closer, in addition to the straw mats. Sorta like small dams along the waterway. Just a thought!

wheat question?
can you mow it like grass, and it stay green or will it die off after mowing? thaks, bw

Wheat is an annual type plant, if you mow it off it will die. It can re seed itself somewhat, but is hybridized and will not be very successful. It is a good and quick planting for errosion control but will get about two feet tall.

Now that the wheat has been mentioned it jogged my memory. I talked to another seed dealer a while back and he mentioned have a wheat mix in the grass for a nurse crop. I'll have ot check it out. Thanks for the reminder.

I fixed the waterway again,re-seeded and put the fabric down. We had 2" of rain one night and several smaller rains and its holding so far.
