That's the typical gap between the flywheel (with imbedded magnet) and coil on small two cycle engines (chainsaws) and between the pickup and rotor on the pointless ignition systems used in 1970's- 1990's automotive ignitions. A steel gauge sticks to the magnet and makes it difficult to judge the gap.
