So I finished this project up last night. I added a 3/8"x3" flat bar under the entire length of the top of my bucket then drilled and bolted on the hooks. I welded the flat bar all around the hooks and tacked in a few other spots. Then I made up the gussets and welded them in solid. Can anyone see anything I should add or change? I know some people say to put the hooks in line with the loader arms but I don't plan to use the outside hooks unless using them both to lift something wide thus putting the strain equal on both sides. For anything smaller I'll just use the center hook.

Looks like you did a good job !! Personally I like the slip hook in the center with grab hooks on the outer edges to hold the chain links . But thats my way for the way I do things !!:D Do what works best for you !!!

Did you get the proper bolts? ASTM Grade 8 would do the job, common at most hardware stores.

I thought about using grab hooks but I use slings instead of chain sometimes and don't like 'choking' the sling end into a grab hook. But then again when I was material shopping a happened to pick up 2 lengths of chain and some locking grab hooks for the ends. Now i'm not really familiar with chain grades, etc. I got 1/4" grade 70 chain. I should be fine lifting with that shouldn't I? I NEVER go under a lifted load or let anyone else.

You not only have to worry about being under the load but also if the sling/chain snaps. It can come back at you and do some damage or death. Think not lifting but if your pulling/towing/winching. Cable/chain/sling/rope, it all will whip back on breakage under stress. It's important too to use asscories, hooks, links/carabiners, rated the same together.

Nice job on the bucket, I'll send mine over... :)
