Century 3040
I chose a Century 3040, R4s, C50 FEL with BoDozer teeth and hyd clamp, plus the C86 backhoe. Great machine. Picked up the unit in May. I now have 120 hrs on it. I have work to do. Keep an eye on front axle bolts. Mine came a bit loose, but I re torqued them and have had no problem.
I noticed a couple guys have experienced the same floppy/float in the dump circuit on the FEL. I did the 50 hr maintenance (change fluids, filters etc.) and it isn't as bad as it was and seems to have improved, but still floppy on occasion. I disconnected the couplers at the valve and hit the control. The bypass was immediate, which might suggest a restriction of some sort in one of the hyd. lines. I sure can't find one however. It might be an adjustment on the cables, but I don't think so. It might be the control valve itself, but again the 'jury's still out'. Dealer is very helpful but 300 miles from me, so I get to do it all myself.
Incidentally, I would suggest that when you change your hydraullic filter, use the Century filter. Same price, but could be just a hair difference in the depth of threads causing a potential seating problem. On the other hand, maybe the Wix filter I had was just not quite as precise. By the by, Wix makes Napa Auto Parts filters. Just drop the first digit and you have the Napa number.
I'll post some pics of the clamp and BoDozer blade in the future. They turn this unit into an extremely useful machine. Once you get used to running the machine, hydrostatic is great, but for the average guy may not be worth the money.

Sorry bout that, I didn't make myself clear. When considering all makes of tractors, HST may not be worth the extra $. Century/Branson does not build HST units. A point to consider, if one is looking at 'orange or green' HST, is the cost to break the tractor in half to fix it in the event of malfunction.

Does the problem usually surface when dumping the bucket and trying to back-drag? It sounds to me like a cavitation problem. Does the loader valve have a regenerative function on it?

If anyone is interested I found a link on the web for the specifications for the Walvoil SDM102 valve. This is the loader valve that is on my 3035. If the site goes down I have DLed the PDF and will e-mail it out, just PM me.

SDM 120 technical specifications in PDF (24 pages)

I also found the web site for the maker of the joystick, Indemar. This site doesn't have a lot of info, but does show some optional handles that incorporate switches for electrically operated valves.

Yes, the dump circuit is floppy (sometimes) when the bucket is dropped all the way down, then attempt to backdrag. By holding the valve open, oil pressure catches up and then it holds. Could be a cavitation in the valve as suggested, or perhaps a piece of debris is hung up in the valve body. We're checking it out.
