Being a farm novice, I was looking for information on the best type of wood to use for fences.
I found this: Fences for the Farm | Publications | UGA Extension

Seems to be a great resource. I was all set to buy some untreated Oak posts; now I am thinking CCA treated Pine.

With fencing, two critical questions:

1. How long is it going to be?
2. What are you trying to keep in/out?

Excellent article, for posts as well as other fence building topics. Naturally, I found that I had been making some of the common mistakes in fence building as well as some other areas.

I recently built some park benches to sit out at various resting spots on our place, and built them out of bald cypress... thinking that I would be getting extremely long life out of them. As I discovered from your article link, they're not much better than any/all other wood if treated. And no better than the much cheaper cedar. Yep, I wasted some money.

On the other hand, the bald cypress benches certainly look good.

Thanks again for your message and the link.

I had my BIL build about 400ft of 4-board fence for us. We used all PT pine for posts and 2x6 for the rails. It's been up a year now, so is weathered enough (and overgrown with weeds enough) for paint/stain. My dad used to LOVE using Cabot's creosote for fence parts - made them last nearly forever. Mere mortals can no longer get creosote, but I'm hoping that this will at least look the same.

Apparently provides pretty good protection too. We'll be trying it out in a few days.

Make sure to keep track of your costs. Did you know that in many cases, your agricultural fencing is tax deductible?

I love it when you guys talk about things that I am interested in :)

We are going to fence about 10 acres for horses.

This application is about 3 acres - the fence will hopefully keep rabbits out and the dogs in.
I am planning on boards for appearance and field wire as the animal barrier.

Common field wire won't stop rabbits. They go under or hop through part way up.

I should have said rabbit wire....that's what I meant

I have 1.5 miles of barb wire fence around my property. My fence is about 98% T-posts( 133) and the remainder are old split cedar posts. The cedar posts were installed in 1892 and are still solid as granite. My T-posts were installed in 1983 and are still in A1 condition.

I have one area where the fence passes thru a swampy area- about 120 feet. In this area I have to replace the T-posts about every 5-7 years. The acid from the soil mixed with the wet conditions dissolves the posts completely, right at ground level. Wish I could find some split cedar posts - they might last longer in the swampy area.

Electric Fence, High Tensile Fencing Supplies

This is my first go to place when planning a fence. Half the time I can find a better price, but that also means that they have the best price half of the time. Their catalog is great to have around the house when thinking of what to do, and day dreaming.

Google Maps Area Calculator Tool

This is a great site for zooming in on your land and measuring how far to fence, or how many acres you will be fencing in. I used it for my big pond to find out it was half an acre bigger then I thought it was!!!
