We have an automatic waterer and my wife wants me to fence in such a way that horses can access it from both sides. So that the horses can get to it from both sides. Basically she wants some horses on each side of the fence to be able to get to the waterer but not able to get through this opening and in with each other. I got the fence up. Figuring out a good way to build over the waterer is what I need help with.

Dave, I've done this many times. I build an "H" brace where the trough will be, except place the horizontal pipe low at the tank top. Pipe is only an inch or so above the trough. They would have to swim under:laughing: Run your fence normal except where the trough is, or use a piece of 2"x4" stock panel there.

I always terminate the fence on either side of the waterer and put two or three boards above the waterer. I use lag bolts instead of nails in the boards. That way if I ever need to service the waterer I can save the boards.

That would be the easiest. Our waterer has a wide concrete pad. I can't terminate the fence close enough to the waterer to keep a horse from trying to squeeze through.

Dave, the stock panels come in 16' lengths and up to 5' tall, they are 4 gauge and would be super easy to do.

Dennis,
Great idea! I think what you are calling stock panel is called pig panel in our area. I can cut a "U" shape in the pig panel for the waterer and then simply steeple it to the posts. My fence and posts are already set on each side of the waterer. Just talked to the wife and she thinks it is a great idea also. I really do appreciate your help.

No problem Dave, it will work and last a Loooong time. If it is a long stretch, you can add a piece of tubing for support.

I have done it where it is easily removable so the trough can be well cleaned also. I have built allot of fence here in Texas, did one on a lot with a 1,000 gallon trough split for 6 corrals , they also added some kind of "treatments" so the stock could all get treated, but cant remember what it was, wormer, electrolytes or something. anyhow, good luck on your project, likely take more time to go get the panel then put it up:thumbsup:

I doubt I'll get it done tomorrow. Sunday around here would be hard to find pig panel. Maybe next weekend. I'll try to take some pics and post them.

Following this thread as I am getting ready to put up three sections of cross-fencing in the next few weeks and am wondering if you guys are talking about something like this:

Home

?????

Am sold on the concept as the Dept of Ag is providing some funding for a well and enough piping to do the job. Would surely be nice to use ONE BOWL model rather than the 2 as they are kinda high dollar. The automatic waterer will surely shut down one of those totally necessary chores. Goats in particular need LOTS of CLEAN water. In the winter this would surely help. Thanks for the thoughts and help.........God bless........Dennis

Dennis,
You were right. Its called stock panel. Pig panel is only 30" high. We got a section today. Didn't have time to put it up.
