Just took shipment of a Ferri MT140 flail mower from Ford Distributing. They had a terrific sale on this mower and they did a nice job answering all my questions and arranging the sale and shipment. This appears to be a medium duty flail and it came with hammers instead of knives with the ability to cut up to 1 3/4 inch material. This is one of the few flails that I focused on as the working and overall widths had to fit comfortably within my vineyard rows but still be wide enough to cut the cover crop and winter prunings in the alleys. I hope to get it together tomorrow and take it for a spin. I know there are a few other TBNers on the board that have Ferri flails and seem to like the build quality. The following are some pics I took after pulling off the shrink wrap while still bound on the pallets. .....Gary

The Ferri scoop knives are hardened so they will last you a long time as long as you use a wet wheel knive grinder when needed to touch them up a bit following the angle of the original grind for the edge.

You will appreciate the front guard plates to keep thick canes from bouncing out.

Be sure to check the oil level in the gear box AND do not pump anymore than 6-7 pumps of grease in each flail rotor bearing and be sure to check for the fittings under the V belt guard and follow the manuals recommendation for greasing those bearings too.

Be carefull cutting the steel bands as they have a lot of tension on them when you uncrate it from the pallet.

Be sure to use some blue loctite on the bolts and nuts used to assemble the three point hitch to avoid problems down the road from vibration. Been there fone that with a rental that I used 35 years ago(you have not lived until you see your mower spinning as fast as the PTO shaft!!!!!!)

Welcome to the Flail Mower Nation

WELL DONE Gary.

leonz - Thank you for the reminders and tips. I've read the manual tonight and will read again as I assemble it tomorrow. I appreciate the points about checking oil and greasing the areas required. Is there a wet wheel that has a jig for flail knives?.....Thanks again, Gary
