So I do not know if this is going to continue to be a problem but might as well ask.
Situation is as couple of days ago I burst a line for the stick on my Ford 550 Backhoe 1078 4200 hrs. Fixed the hose filled the fluid, used the machine for a couple of hours everything was ok. Fluid is full and clean I changed it when I got the machine about 150 hrs ago and I have changed 6 hoses in that time.
Today I got stuck in the mud, wanted to use the backhoe to swing the machine out of the hole. I have done this before with no problems. Today the dipper did not want to lift the machine. The cylinder was most of the way in and I could bump the controls and the dipper would move a little, maybe 1/4 of an inch at a time. I did this 10 or 15 times and everything started working correctly again. When I bumped the controls it sounded like the bypass was opening, there was no change in the engine sound like it was overloaded. I have been using the machine to remove tree roots and the machine will go into bypass quite often if I grab too much at a time.

Any suggestions on what to look for? Do the hydro pumps on these machines get weak or just stop working? Is there any way to test the pump without special equipment?

Have you checked the relief pressure.

Do you know the tractor relief pressure. If you have known good cyl, and you max out that cyl, you should see the relief pressure on the hyd gauge.

Things that will cause loss of pressure.

Worn pump, worn cyl seals, worn valve spools.

If the relief is going off, that means that you are working at tractor specs.

I would recommend you install a hyd gauge in a tee in the IN port of the first valve in the flow path.

Then use it to troubleshoot and monitor the hyd system.

Last week a friend and I bought a 1979 Ford 550 industrial backhoe. It is to be used 3 or 4 times a year at the deer ranch in Texas.

The backhoe 'bucket curl' and 'boom up' aren't working properly. The previous owner said he loaned it to someone about a year ago, and he believes they replaced some hoses and did not connect them back correctly.

It seems that when I pull the 2 center levers at the same time, the boom will lift. I assume that the boom should lift when pulling only one lever, but it won't. I'm not familiar with backhoes operated with 4 levers. I'm only familiar with 2 levers.

Could some of the hoses be connected wrong? Where should I look? Is there anything else that I should look for?

The levers, from left to right, should be Crowd (dipperstick in/out), Lift (Boom up/down), Actuate (Bucket curl/dump), and Swing (Left/Right). All of these are intuitive as the element movement corresponds to the control lever movement. If any of these are incorrect, switch the hoses of the incorrect movements and you should end up OK.
