field boss 21 NH tc18
Hi I have recently purchased a 1987 Field Boss 21 (bolens G212, Iseki Tu2100) to use for snowplowing with a white front mount snowblower. The tractor was traded into a local Kubota dealership after being used by a small village here in Alberta Canada. The tractor spent its life inside a heated shop and was not equipped with a block heater. I have sourced a block heater but am not sure on the install of which frost plug it should go in. I am also interested in maybe adding a circulating heater as well as we often have -40c. Pictures would be great:thumbsup: I searched but could not really locate anything and I have ordered a service manual but have not recieved yet. Thanks in advance..Russ

<> I had trouble starting my ISEKI G-174 in very cold weather when I first bought it.....I was afraid of burning out the expensive starter.....so I installed a circulating pump type block heater I bought @ Napa....I stayed clear of the frost plug type as my tractors engine does not have too much space inside the block.....long story short.....you could run into problems unless you can get one thats designed for your exact model engine....the pump/heater cost me about $140.00 cdn...

I spent tons more money on brass fittings than the cost of the pump/heater..as didn't want to cut any of the expensive hard to get top and lower rad hoses..and removed the one and only side block drain plug nearest the oil filter and connected a brass fitting and routed a proper lenght of aprox. 1/4" thick wall hose from there to the fittings on the rad.... nicest thing was...mine were are all standard pipe threads and not metric....

I had some problems connecting it up....because there was very little space to work..but it can be done with lots of patience and planning and work arounds plus skinned knuckles....I have no time today....but maybe I could snap some pic's of the installation @ a later date..even though the side engine shroud is hiding most of my brass fitting plumbing work.....but after the complete installation I had no problems starting mine outside in the very cold snaps of minus degree weather.....

I'd plug it in for say 15 minutes pryor to starting it and preheat the glow plugs and it would fire right up.....or another way was just keep feeling the rad/block to where it felt warm....because mine does circulate the antifreeze/water inside the rad and block......this is the route I went and I'm happy with it..I probley won't need to use it too often now that my tractor is now always stored inside our garage...but it's there if I ever need it...hope this helps.....take care Ampa <>

<>If u reviewed my other threads...then u know what kind of a plumber I is...anyhow guy...I've got lots on my mind right now and must take things easy... so won't be able to remove the side shroud of my tractor....but I should be able to sit@ my desk an guide u through the procedure with no problems...

I'm quite certain u have takin' my advice to go this route....on these greymarket tractors u don't need problems of wreckin' a part like a frost plug to find u can't get the the thing to fit in the tight space...when u mentioned a type of circulating pump...

I knew what u wanted....and thought I'd chime in here..my motto is don't make extra expense and work for yourself....I've connected mine it works like I thought it would.."GREAT"....I wouldn't do it any different....I'm a stubborn Canadian wouldn't u know .....anyhow I'll see if I can can get this poor ol' body of mine down to to our garage an snap a pic or two of where the circulatin' pump is installed up under the rad.....of all places Hmmmm

u have to get it (pump/heater)as close as possible..even without pic's I can guide u through ....with out problems ....believe me.....just don't cut any of ur rad hoses.upper or lower..don't install it to lower hose....it mentions a saddle....u do not go this route... to help....I'll stay on the side of this thread to guide u along...scary @ first but not that bad..if I can do it u can as well....a good suppy of bandaids is a must :D....take care Ampa <>

Thanks again AMPA what part of Canada are you from?
Do you remember by chance what size the proper fittings were that you used? I located a block heater using an agco parts book online. It might also help you find parts if you need anything for your tractor.

not sure if I can hotlink but take away the spaces and a few dots.

Last spring my G174 came with a power cord leading to a pad of fibreglass-type material caulked to the outside of the oil pan at the back. After a while I figured out that that must be the block heater. I haven't tried it yet so far as the engine starts well in the cold.

that might just be a pan heater a block heater is usually on the side of the block and replaces a frost plug with a plug that contains a heating element. The outside of the plug usually has the plug in cord going into it.

Can you tell me where you got the block heater information and which frost plug you ever found out to use?

What engine is installed? Might it be a Mitsubishi? (some Bolens were mitsu driven), if so I might be able to provide you with the info you need.

I found a block heater by using an AGCO dealer they were able to cross reference the tractor as it falls under Agco now. I also sourced all the cooling hoses and a few other odds and ends I wanted to have around as spares. I have not yet installed it as it happens I will update when I do. I can try and grab the number off it but it will be a few days as it is out at my farm.
