Hi guys,
I noticed that only one of my field brakes is working on my YM1700. The adjustment for it looks all the way tight. Is there a likely explanation for why it's not working? How tough is it to repair. Thank.

Here is a drawing of it. If the adjustment is gone I suspect something is rotten in Denmark. Simple pull apart if it were not for rust, goop, grime, rice paddy water, etc, etc. Many times people struggle getting those things opened up because of it. Need good patience and lots of penetrating oil. Many times folks just turn them around and good for another 100,000 miles. http://www.hoyetractor.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=HTE&Category_Code=YM1700BRAKE

Winston1 -- Did you intend to upload a drawing?

Thanks for the update. Lots of parts in there... I hope it's not too hard to get it apart. I had a devil of a time getting the plug out to add my temperature gauge; finally broke it free last night!

Getting it apart wasn't too bad. I needed to us some liquid wrench on the gasket after taking off the bolts. That loosened it enough to knock it loose with a hammer. I discovered that there is an adjustment bolt that has two positions, narrow and wide. Luckily it was on the narrow setting, so I was able to put it on the wide setting to push the brake pads out. I put it all back together and it works a little now -- an improvement -- but not as well as the other side. On the good side, the brake pushes down and engages the brake very firmly. On the side I repaired, it pushes down and then is kind of mushy at the bottom. I tested it out with the tractor moving, and it does brake, but not as strongly as the good side. My guess is that the brake pads on the weak side are onlyslightly touching the outside of the drum, while on the good side, the brake pads are contact all the way around. Think I'm right?

Did you move the front shoe to back and visa versa? Seems many do that to even wear. You probably already know but when brakes are adjusted properly the pedals will be the same height when fully engaged. This allows you to have 2 wheel brakes when stepping on both pedals at the same time.

Winston1 -- Yes, first thing I tried was trading the brake shoe positions. I put it back together and it still didn't engage the brake with the adjustment all the way in. I thought I might have to get new shoes, but then I noticed it had another adjustment. On the Hoye brake parts diagram, the brake pedal moves #9. The #10 on the diagram is the other bolt that can be adjusted. It has a sort of rectangular cross sectionand sits between the ends of the brake shoes, like the #9, but the #10 is held fixed by a bolt. After doing this, I had to set the adjuster most of the way out to get it to match the good side (as best I could.)
