fifth wheel ball placement

I know alot of poeple will give you sh*& for using a half ton with a gooseneck approaching 5 ton but if you have good tires & good brakes on the trailer & truck, it will handle much better than 2.5 ton on a ball hitch. You are at the limit but sounds like you have a good safe setup once you get the ball in front of the axle.

Remember a big payment on a new truck don't make them any safer.

Okay Guys, I'm getting the truck back tomorrow night after a $1500.00 rebuild of the rear end. Ouch!!! I'm off this weekend so I will be moving that ball ahead.
Z I had to chuckle when I read the part about your wife. My wife is the same. Nothings too good for the horses. If I had half the money thats been spent on Vet bills over the last several years I could buy that better truck.

Nah, who cares about 4-wheel, 4-channel ABS with traction control, skid control, trailer sway control on a few, an electronic locking rear diff on GM, active transfer case on GM and I think Ford, integrated brake controllers from the factory, and 4-wheel disk brakes instead of rear drums off a '62 Plymouth. Nothing new makes trailering safer, nope.

Not saying it's unsafe to tow with something older, by any stretch, and we can't all afford new. But if money's no issue, the new stuff is definitely a lot better.

:)

Sounds like a typical female horse owner. My wife has been decent at keeping vet and farrier costs under control, and horses really are a lot cheaper when you can have them at home. (And that partially justifies my tractor...) But the way they obsess when trailering them, you'd think they were carrying something more valuable than the Hope Diamond and more delicate than a soap bubble.

I agree if money is not any issue we all would have new Freightlines in the shed but if you have an older truck with the proper care & a little preventative maintence & spend a little more on the saftey stuff IE tires brakes & chains.
but nothing makes up for a little common since & patience.

I would go with a Peterbilt myself:)
