As usual terms get mixed in the discussion.
Years ago they made "Split Rims" the rim was like a "C" and where the edges met it was sort of like a puzzle shape edge that kind of locked when inflated and had a solid ring on the open end. Technically the ends of the "C" locked together under pressure. BUT the lock was not very strong and could come apart if it got struck the right way.
Then there is "Multi-Piece" Rims. The basic rim is one piece and the open end will have one or more rings to secure it.
