On Saturday, I finished building my filter cart and modifying the cover on the PT 1850 for the quick connects to the hydraulic tank as well as the tank magnets and a thermometer. I am happy with how it turned out but I might do a small tweak on it yet - add a valve to cut back a little on the flow and pressure. The pump I am currently using will pump 4.5 GPM (measured) through the filters when the oil is at 60 degrees F and about 2 GPM (from chart) at 0 degrees F. I also want to measure to see if there is room on the PT to see if I have the option to use a 12V pump and run it while using the PT. Hopefully, I can post pictures, etc. this weekend.
The main reason I am writing now is that there is a filter cart on Ebay:
eBay: HYDRAULIC FILTER CART PORTABLE TRANSFER PUMP PARKER (item 110135714972 end time Jun-12-07 18:24:38 PDT)
It is 26 years old and it does not say what micron ratings the filters are. Worst case, you could add an inline 1 micron filter. I have not checked the specs for this particular unit but they usually run $1400 - $2000 new. By the time you ship this one, you will be at $500 or more. You can definitely build one cheaper than that, much cheaper if you can buy a used pump or scrounge some parts. It is not easy to find a pump rated for 40 - 100 psi, viscous oils (especially cold oil), 170 degrees F, and self priming. I ended up buying a used industrial process pump for $55 - my guess is that it costs way over a grand new. The used pump needed a starting capacitor but it works fine after getting that. For the filters I am using, I need at least 20 psi. (The cheap $40 pumps that I have seen are rated for 30 minute duty cycles and may not be able to pump very hot oil or cold oil - I might try one at some point for yucks just so people know if they work for this application). The filter cart on Ebay might be a good deal if you are going to buy one instead of building one, especially if you can pick the Ebay unit up instead of having it shipped.
