Filter removal

Their is a cam acting clamp that locks on to the oil filter from the botom. It is all steel, turned with a half inch drive ratchit. I can't remember were I got it, but I had to get it when I was in your situation. It has never failed. Some times I have to use a pice of pipe on the ratchit, it's on so tight, but it comes off.

I think you mean one of these..

I had a bought the black one at a local store, but it didnt tighten down enough for a quite small filter.. I borrowed (and later bought on ebay) the silver one that will go just a little smaller because the 'fingers' are thicker. The silver filter was made by OTC prod #4568

The filter was extremely tight on my Kubota when I did the 50 hour service. I broke a rubber strap wrench and then a metal strap wrench. Then tried using 2 strap wrenches at a time and couldn't budge it.

I finally got it with a chain wrench I borrowed from my neighbor. It looks like bicycle chain that goes around the filter instead of a regular strap. Very heavy duty and practically indestructible. It dented the filter pretty bad but the long handle on it gave plenty of leverage and it came off easily.

Why would the factory install them so tight?

You do wonder that cause there's no need for it to be that tight. Besides that, what kind of wrench do they use to put it on that tight with???

I have only had one case where I could not get a Band wrench to work on a filter removal and in the end it came down to a hammer and a dull chisel to remove what was left.

I got one of these about like the black one
works great on my BX filters.

Only complaint is they aren't bi directional.

I have an oil filter remover that looks kind of like a big pair of channel lock pliers, except with rounded jaws with rather large teeth. The thing works beautifully as long as you have room to get at the filter (which it seems like you would with a tractor filter).

I think I got them at Harbor Freight and they are worth ten times what I paid for them. They never slip.

Otherwise, I would also vote for the LARGE pair of channel locks, which you can also use for other things.

Strap wrench, and if that does not get it, fold a sheet of sandpaper so abrasive is out on both sides and use that between strap and filter "gription" (a Richard Petty term I believe).

Thanks Raven and to everyone who submittted, the sandpaper did the trick!
