If you do add cross links that you previously removed, be sure to use new hooks to attach them. I spent some time experimenting with the proper settings on mine and removed one link on each side (They seem to fit slightly differently between left and right tires). During the experiments I temporarily reattached both of them and in trying them out two of the hooks fractured. Not really surprising because you can't flex that stuff back more than once. In the end the best setting was with those links removed. But if I had to put them back on it would only be with new hooks. You may be able to buy them locally, or tirechain.com has all the repair parts you would ever need.

These are old enough that shouldn't be a problem. The older (non-Chinese) hooks usually aren't as brittle as the newer ones. ~~ grnspot110
