Getting old. Sold the ranch. Sold the tractors. Moved back to the city.
Started the patio last summer

The concrete pad supports the masonry barbeque pit

The concrete blocks are faced with drain rock left over from the septic system installation. Used thinset mortar to stick the rock facing to the cinderblocks.

The work surface is covered with countertop tile. The charcoal grill/smoker is in the foreground.

There's a gas grill for fast cooking.

Started the pergola construction last month. The posts are 4x4 redwood and the frame is 2x8 redwood.

The purlins are 2x4 Douglas fir painted with Behr 502 redwood stain/sealer.

Got "dappled shade" on the patio now. Don't mind cooking on the patio now when the temp hits triple digits. Will add a misting system to the pergola later.

Looks good! Nice construction... The stone grill looks far more useable than a simple grill top and I like the tile surface. The pergola is very nicely built and stained appropriately for Northern Cal. Are you going to grow a vine or other such plant over it? My wife wants a clematis growing all over ours...

Haven't decided about vines on the pergola, but it's a thought.

flusher,

Thanks for the update on your grill and patio project. I remember the nice rock work you did on it in your previous post and it's nice to see that newest updates that you've accomplished.

Are there any plans for a lawn? When I lived in the Bay Area, it seemed everyone wanted a nice fiscue type lawn and bermuda grass was something to get rid of. Now that I live in Texas, bermuda is the desirable grass and fiscue is something planted in winter for temporary color.

There are all sorts of bermuda types of grass that will thrive in just about any soil conditions. We have it on golf courses where it's very short and fine, to sports fields and pastures for grazing and haying. I have become a HUGE fan of bermuda and highly recomend it.

Vines, flowers, etc will attract bees, bugs, drop flower petals, leaves, etc. that might get in your food. Nice looking setup you have there. I have a pergola with wisteria on it, looks nice when its in bloom, bees love it.

I have Kentucky 31 tall fescue growing like crazy in the front yard. Seeded that part in April and it germinated in about 3 weeks. Have to mow it every 5 days or so.

Didn't get the sprinklers in the back yard until early May and seeded there with fescue around mid May. So the seed is in the ground, but is only germinating close to the sprinkler rotors where it's wettest. I need to run the sprinklers longer in the backyard to get germination now or wait until cooler weather and the start of the rainy season in Nov before the back yard starts to look nice. Right now I'm just watering to keep the dust down and am weeding it by hand.

When the grass comes in and it's all nice and green back there, please update us with some pics. I'm sure it will look amazing!!!!
