We have 35 acres of wooded land on which we plan to build a home. I have finally found a guy to cut the apx 20 acres we need cleared for the house, shop, pasture and 2-5 acre lake we want to build. I have never done this and want to do it properly the first time. We have a big valley through the middle of the property that has a natural spring in it, I hope to utilize this for the lake. I am not sure how big the lake will be. I am hoping someone with a lot of experience can point me in the right direction. Arent there state agencies that will assist? I am in west TN, not CA, or MD or any of the commie states, so greenies please dont freak out. Although I am sure even TN will create plenty of hurdles to jump. Just looking for general advice on how to proceed.

Step #1: Find out who your county's Extension Agent is, take him to lunch, and make friends with him...

He'll be a wealth of information about what resources are available for free or for hire in your area -- plus advise you on how to proceed with your plans. He'll likely even walk your property with you and discuss your plans, providing all sorts of useful advice along the way...

BTW, I'm a displaced TN native and doing something on a much smaller piece on property in East Tennessee to retire back to...

There should be something called a Soil Conservation District, or something similar, in the county government listings in the phone book. They should be able to point you in the right direction. The agent may actually be an employee of the USDA Farm Service Agency.

I'm not sure what the the County Extension Agent is called, these days, but I was directed to the right person by using that title for them...
