After what seemed like an eternity since my venerable '94 GMC Suburban bit the dust, I finally found my replacement tow rig. It's a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 w/5.9l Cummins, four speed auto, crew cab, short box, 150,000 mi., originally a California vehicle. I looked underneath and I can't even find any surface rust on the springs or chassis!

I called the dealer on my day off, explaining what I was looking for, and how hard they are to find in my area, to which he replied, "Oh, we have one on the lift right now. We just got it in and we're doing the service on it before we list it." I told him to put a hold on it, as I live 135 miles away and am very interested in seeing it in person. My wife and I made the trek to the city, gave the truck the once over, drove it, and found out the AC was not working. I mentioned this to the dealer, who said, "Like I mentioned on the phone, we just got it in and haven't even driven it yet. Give me an hour, and I'll have it running." Seems it just needed a back flush and refill, as it will now produce an arctic blast like it should.

I was initially looking for a 6 speed stick, but this truck was priced right, and so clean, and drove so smoothly, I succumbed to my gut feelings and bought it on the spot.

And... Oh, what power!

Joe

Nice truck, you're gonna love it. That Cummins is just getting broken in.

Great choice. Your gonna' love the Cummins. Don't forget the '03 to '07 5.9 engine has a 7500/15000 mile oil change schedule.

Good looking truck. I scored an 07 Ram 1500, Hemi engine, auto, 4X4, in January. Love the truck, hate the gas milage :). Sometimes wish I had looked harder and possibly found a good 2500 something like your new rig....

So far, I'm impressed with the truck. According to the trip computer, I got 22 mpg on the trip home. This was a combination of 75 mph interstate and 55-60 mph county highways.

The following day, I got a call from a friend, wondering if I could do a little loader work for him. I loaded the tractor on the car trailer and took off. I must say this is where the diesel really shines, and, of course, the main reason I wanted one. Whereas my old Suburban struggled to pull the tractor/trailer combo, the Dodge didn't even seem to notice it was back there. It's almost like it was daring me to make it work. I knew it had lots more power, but I wasn't quite expecting that big of a difference. I think I'll be looking for more excuses to haul stuff around. :D

Now I just have to start moving all the junk from the Suburban to the Ram... Ham radio, GPS, jumper cables, tow chains, tie downs, etc...

Oh yeah... My wife loves it too!
