Okay, I know I'm going to get jumped on because in some of the pictures I am going to show there are people handling downed power lines. In every instance that I saw this happen the lines were broke and the ends were very evident. If they were not obviously broken they were left alone. Even today, two weeks after the storm, there are homes with the old power lines propped up by crossed 2x4's so the people can drive under them. The line crews are running new line and letting the old stay on the ground until later.

On the 28th, as far as I know, there was no power in the entire Jackson Purchase area of Kentucky. The main TVA lines were down and if there was power from another source it was shut off because the lines were so weighted with ice. I don't know what the standard distance is between poles but in most cases the lines were so low that if they were not touching the ground they were close enough for a standing man to reach up and touch.

In one six mile stretch between the towns of Mayfield and Fancy Farm I am told that every single pole was down. In our county alone 1900 poles had been replaced by Saturday night the 7th.

I work in Union City Tennessee. It is a 50 minute drive to my home a mile east of Mayfield Kentucky. The drive took two and a half hours on Wednesday the 28th and here are some pictures of the drive.

Just north of Fulton KY on the Purchase Parkway I saw a tree fall on the road so I stopped and took the first picture. Six minutes and sereral trees on the road later I took the second one on a bridge. The weight of the ice was pulling the trees over. There was a very fine mist falling and adding to the ice weight.

The third picture in this series is of the tree line on the other side. Notice that the tops are broke out of ALL the trees.

A few minutes later I stopped on another bridge to take the last picture in this post and while I was sitting there the tree most exposed in the skyline fell on top of another. I decided to stop fooling around and get home while I could.

Reminds me of when I was a kid in NC. School was canceled about mid day because of the pending ice storm. My sister was driving and I was hanging out the passenger window flipping the windshield wipers to try and keep the ice from building up on them. I'll take a foot or 2 of snow anyday over a tenth of an inch of ice. At least I know I can drive in the snow.

We are getting our butts kicked here in North Dakota today with a ice storm. It's been raining all day, the temps did work up to 35 but it's still raining and the temps are falling.
Then tonight we are supposed to get 5+ inches of snow on top of the ice.

Our Generator is gassed and ready to run, did a good test run on Saturday for about 3 hours, refilled and ready to go.

Man,you really got hammered. We had pretty much the same thing in December but looks like it is even worse there. We were out for ten days, had line crews here from all over the place.
