Tractor
Early 1949 Ford 8N
1949 8N tractor with a 60 inch Big Bee finish mower.

Today I was out mowing and the mower threw a belt.
The grass I was mowing was real thick and damp.
The belt is shredded and I need a new belt.
What size belt do I need.
Can I get a belt that will last a really long time.

I bought the mower used. So I don't know much about it.
I had to buy blade bolts for it and got bolts for a King Kutter from TSC.
So I need to know what size of belt to get.
And I want a high quality belt.

Thanks.

Hello fellow Bear, bummer about the belt. If there is enough of the belt left to get a measurement, or at least the 2 ends that will touch, take it to a lawn mower shop and buy a belt from them. Most mower shops carry a better belt than you can find in an Auto Parts store. They should be able to get pretty close the the same size.

You can use a flexible tape measure, like one used for sewing, to measure the size of belt that will be needed.

Bear once you do find out the size of your belt it never hurts to buy two. We keep one on a nail in the pole barn for ours just in case of an emergency.

The belt that is on there is still in one piece.
Just has hunks shredded out of it.

Can I get a belt guaranteed not to do this.

I saw a spring on there that had come loose too.
Gotta figure out where it goes back.
Anyone know where I can download a manual for this mower.

Thanks.

Thanks for the link.
According to that site one of their dealers is just up the road from here.
Have to go check it out this week.

Thanks.

Orielleys auto parts carry the Gate's green belts which are about as good as you get for this application, but all belts will come apart at some point, they are a wear item.

Bring your old belt in and they can match it up. Just hope it does not go over 100 inches.

I spend a fair amount of time down in your neck of the woods in Sequatchie at the Trials Training Center.

There is a tractor dealership there in Jasper that I have heard good things about but never dealt with personally, I bet he could help you out as well though.

Yep, we got an O'Reillys here in town.
That would be even closer than the co-op.

I drive by that AC dealer in down between Jasper and Kimball sometimes.
I just like to drive by that way to see what equipment they got out front.
We have a Case dealer here in Dunlap.

Mostly I just want a belt that will hold up to the abuse I throw at it.
I regularly mow grass that is too thick and too high.
This last batch of grass was about 10 inches high.
And it was so thick it bogged down the tractor in a few places.
I'm gonna brush hog the rest of it.

When that mower was manufactured all V belts were cloth wrapped. Today, the V belts are cut or sheared to create the V and they don't last as well as wrapped belts. You can still purchase wrapped belts, but they are getting harder to find and are also more expensive. The three measurements that you will need to get the proper replacement belt is the length, the width of the pulley and the pitch of the V. When in doubt, take a pulley with you if at all possible. If the belt has the wrong pitch, it will either ride too low or too high in the pulley and will not give good results nor will it give good service. On a machine that old, I would also check the pulleys for any defects and possible warping. All pulleys need to spin smoothly and all must be in alignment with each other. While it is down, it might be a good time to check the bearings and give the unit a good cleaning and painting. If you take care of it properly, it will last another lifetime. They just don't make equipment like that any longer. Junk....
