I have a Jinma 284 tractor and am planning on buying a finish mower. Which would be a better fit for my tractor, a 5 ft or a 6 ft.

Depends upon what you're cutting. It may handle the six footer in light stuff, but the five footer would likely be better for all around use. Besides - unless you have a front end loader - some six footers could be a bit heavy when it comes time to lift & carry. My seven footer for example, weighs somewhere around 865 pounds.

I run a 6' Caroni rear discharge and its top notch. I have no problems with it behind my Jinma 254. I had a piece of junk 5' King Kutter side discharge to start and and I should have traded it for a Yellow Dog then shot the dog.

Spend a few extra $$ in this area. Get rear discharge, solid tires, and one with as few moving parts as possible. My Caroni has 1/3 the part as the KK did so less to fail.

You can just see it in the pic below. With my wheels set at wide stance the 6' mower is just perfect.

I'm going to look at two used finish mowers tomorrow. One is a 6 foot and one a 5 foot. Will probably just buy the best one. What I cut will not be very thick. I will check out the weight of the 6 foot though.

Thanks, Pat

I have been using a 6 foot JD finishing mower , side discharge I picked up for around 4 years now to mow my pasture.

I vote for 6 foot, rear discharge.

Thanks for the comments, I didn't get to see the mowers yet. Maybe this weekend. The 6 ft. mower is a Comer. Anyone have experience with that brand?

Thanks, Pat

I don't have experience with that brand but I would also go with the rear discharge. Even in longer grass the rear discharge doesn't get clogged. I have a 284 and I would recommend the 6' also.
