I have a new Phoenix finishing mower that is leaking excessive oil from the vent cap. Called the dealer and they are making some calls about it. Anyone have similar issues. Its a great mower and has no issues other than this. Checked the oil level and took some out to the lower end of the sight glass. Next step is change the oil in case it somehow got water in it..Any insight is appreciated.

Sounds like a problem similar to what the Caroni Flail mowers had. The "fix" involved adding a 1 inch extension to the oil fill/dipstick hole. I did this to my mower and it solved the oil "burp" problem. Do a search on the caroni flail forum and you should find the info complete with pics. Good luck.

Not familiar with your application. I am assuming you have a 1/2" pipe plug sort of thing with a loose fitting metal cap on top of it and a hole drilled thru the center, mounted vertically.

If the oil level is not excessive, then I don't see possible water intrusion as the culprit. Realizing that oil floats on water but in a gearbox you just have a homogenized mixture till it stops moving and has time to separate and all.

Could be the mfgr put the plug in the wrong location; i.e. the gears sling oil right where the plug is mounted. Might remove the plug and run the machine and determine just how much splash occurs. If excessive, then you have your answer and putting a couple of inches of pipe between the plug and housing could stop your problem.

Looks like you got a better reference while I was fabricating this reply. So, looks like you know how to fix er up.

If the oil is milky it has water and do not worry about it otherwise.

You also have to remember the oil in the gearbox is heating up from use as well becoming thinner from the heat buildup.

The heat buildup also creates pressure in the gearbox and the vent relieves the pressure as well.

Yup tis the oil burp problem, dont forget the lubrication method is a splash type. you can add the vent extension and buy the fitting from Mcmaster and others or simply check the oil level every day-just remember that a splash lubircation system depends on the oil level to maintain its lubrication mowing slopes or down hill can be a bit worry some-as long as you watch the oil and maintain the half sight glass depth fill level I see no issues with it.
