I just downloaded Avant and installed it. I like a lot of things about it, especially the tabbed pages and the mouse shortcuts for going forward and back. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I'm not sure the pop-up blocker works as well as the Google Toolbar, but it works.

Glad you like it Bill. I like all the options it gives you and it works better than most sites that Firefox doesn't. I actually jump back and forth between Avent,firefox, and the Flashpeak Slimbrowser. They are all better and faster than IE in my opinion.

DannyD, I run it on my new dell with xp pro and it runs fine...
Not sure what you have tried but.... or which version I still use 8.x
I did try FF 9.2 and don't care for it so far, but it is still being tweaked....

If you areusing 9.x it is still in beta I believe and could be part of your problem.

If you are using 8.x try the following:
By defualt when you 1st install it it goes to mozillas home page....
(probably tried already)
But try going to your home page then from FF menu bar, go to :

Tools/options/general

Try the button " Use curent page" to set your home page to FF defualt home page.

If this won't do it, try a reinstall and make sure you TEMP disable anti V. software and hope it's that simple. It could be a glitch with your laptops version of xp as they tend to be some what customized but the laptop makers..... could also be a bad down load, I have had that on occasion....(try down loading it again if you got patients /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It takes a lil getting used to but I like it moo-E better tha IE....

One more, your usual Home Page could be a IE only page...which sould still let you get there but may not function well in FF...

Mike, OK, I tried Firefox (I'm using it right now) I fail to see much difference except cosmetics with it and IE. It doesn't obviously seem any faster. What am I missing?

What are you missing? All those friendly folks who want to help you manage your pc by sneaking little programs into it and taking over. It is eating my lunch keeping these machines straight, (mostly the folks pc's from home)

Because IE is built into the operating system, it has a level of access to the inner workings that another brand of browser can't get. There are all kinds of ways to secure holes in IE, but it seems like its a losing battle.

So not being able to tell any differance with FireFox is a good thing, because it is far more secure...

We run about 40 PCs' at our business. I have been trying out more and more of these applications not for security reasons, but for cost. Each PC needs a copy of XP PRO - $150, Office Basic - $250, Server Lic - $95, Anti-Virus lic $45. Thats $550 in software... a new computer costs that much!

Open Office is going to save us some real change. Unfortuanlty there is no way around XP as there is not a chance all our weird applications will run on Linux.

Have you ever run a Network Attached Storage box before? I am hoping that by running our parts system file sharing off of there i can buy less server licences.

I have never run an NAS box, but you could easily put together a Linux box running as an SMB file server, and a couple of large hard drives. An old Pentium III with a network card, and a 100GB hard drive or two would be ideal. If the data is critical, you could even do software RAID on the server.

I run a lot of Iomega NAS's They are great. They are strictly file servers and will not run any applications. (like sql...) I would NOT piece together an old machine or a bargain clone box as a parts system server. You don't need more headaches...

Why do you feel this would cause headaches? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I have an old and perfectly functional Pentium Pro PC with 512 MB RAM that has been running as a file server for a windows network for the last five years. There has been absolutely no maintenance on this system in that time frame with the exception of shutting it down and turning it back on in the event of a power outage that lasts longer than the UPS capacity.

What do you feel is inside a NAS box that makes it more reliable than a scratch built system? There is a motherboard, a hard drive, a power supply, an operating system, a network adapter and usually a web browser for remote administration. A NAS device IS a PC in a box.

Also, how do you address redundancy in a NAS system (I have no usage experience with them)? Can you do RAID? Distribute your data across multiple devices? I truely don't know the answer to this part.

They are RAID5. Two on a rack is pretty redundant.

If you are happy with what you have, more power to ya.

I have made my living doing IS since 1980. I support a fair number of servers , one with a parts operation.
