IH 424
I own an IH 424 tractor that starts fine but dies immediately upon release of the push button starter. My wiring diagram shows what I believe to be a ballast resitor but I am unable to locate it on the tractor. I have replaced the points, cap, condensor and coil but this start then stop problem remains. I remember having a 1970,s era dodge with the same problem (ballast resistor). Does this sound correct? Can anyone help. Thanks.

Don't know if this is it or not, but if you have an electric fuel pump, check the fuse. I had same symptoms with a car once, and turned out the fuse had blown.
Good luck.

If there is a ballast resister, it is going to be bypassed when the engine is in the start position. So it is possible that it is the problem. More likely, however, is the ignition switch itself not working correctly. If you have a volt meter, see if it puts out 12 volts in the run position, if not, the switch is bad.

You probably have a primary ignition circuit with a bypass of the ballast resistor when the starter is cranking. If the ballast resistor has failed (open circuit) the engine will start with the starter turning because the resistor is bypassed. When you release the key to the run position, the engine will die because the ballast resistor has failed or the wire to the ballast resisitor or the connections are damaged etc. The fix is to find cause of the open circuit.

Since you have a starter solenoid, trace the circuits that go from the key switch to the solenoid to the ignition coil to look for the offending component. You may not have a separate ballast reisitor per se. There may be a resistance wire in the circuit that has failed. You can replace this with a ballast resistor if you want to if that's where the open circuit is.

I had a IH 424 and run across this same problem and the resistor is located near the coil. Trace the wires off of the coil and one of them should lead to the resistor and you can test this to see if it is the problem by jumping around the resistor to see if it starts if it soes remove the resistor and replace. Been 10 years or so since dealing with this issue so I am a little fuzzy on the subject but if I remember right the resistor was about 3 inches long and white or cream colored.
