Has anyone ever seen a firewood processor with a big multiwedge split knotted oak ?
All the Youtube videos in product demonstrations, they are splitting straight grained pine. Where all i'll be ever splitting is knotted oak.
What are your experiences, is it worth the effort to build my own given the wood i'll have to work with ?

Take and look at this. I have used several types and this is so far the fastest I've used, it handels knots pretty good. It runs on 400v 3Phase 32A and you need a compressor when some systems it is penumatisk controlled

I have split a lot of knotty wood including oak and I have found that the multi wedge is not made for this type of wood. If you have the power chances are something is going to bend or break. I lent my home made splitter to my Uncle to split elm. He brought the splitter back saying that it didn't have enough power. It had power to bend the 1 inch push plate.

Look at:

DR Power RapidFire Log Splitter ProXL with steel table (Reconditioned)

Then click on the video button.

The top video is titled:

Splitting the Toughest Logs - DR RapidFire Log Splitter

So there's no misunderstanding, I do not sell them or work for the company. I just bought mine. Waiting for delivery. I own three DR Power products now.

On the end of that video i see they give you a free 6 month trial. The reconditioned unit you bought is probably 6 months old ;)

But seriously, i dont see any knotted wood, like the top of an oak where a log branches out in two big branches. And, its still a single wedge. i need to know if the multiwedge splitters can take big logs like a french fries cutter, as i can imagine it wont be any fun using a chainsaw to free a stuck log from one of these wedges: if a single wedge splitter stalls in the log, you can lift it up and pound it off with another log: You cant do that with a multiwedge, once stuck you need to scrape it clean with a chainsaw...

Renze,

On any of their units. Not just refurbished units. In fact, I believe it is a year trial now. If after a year you want to return it, you can.

> The reconditioned unit you bought is probably 6 months old

I know. And well worth the discount. You'd also need to know the company to give you comfort.

> But seriously, i don't see any knotted wood, like the top of an oak where a log branches out in two big branches.

I guess you either discount a unit you've never tried or you try it yourself.

> And, its still a single wedge.

And a jet is still only a vehicle. But it'll get a bigger job done before your car has warmed up.

I'm just saying, a single wedge with a 3 second reset time, beats a 4way with a 30 second reset time anyday.

Good luck in your search.

Indeed, but my point wasnt about capacity at all: it was about the backbreaking work of manhandling a 2.5 foot diameter slice of oak log under the splitter. I want to cut a slice on a table, roll it over into a splitter that splits it to pieces without repositioning a 100 pound log. Our 12.5 ton splitter is unable to split them dead on center (which would reduce the weight of the individual piece to a weight a man can handle)

Next to that, i'll take a huge hydraulic pump on the PTO over a pinion and movable rack anyday... from an engineers point of view, for reliability. A pinion and movable rack have the same reliability as a dog clutch in a car transmission instead of a friction plate clutch.
