I'm about to purchase a 6 ft rear discharge finish mower for my Kubota L4300. I'm heavily leaning on the First Choice brand sold by a local Kubota dealer. Does anyone own one of these and how well does it work and hold up? What sort of lifespan should I expect out of it? Thanks.

Hey NCKubotaman,

Don't know anything about that brand, but where in NC are you?

I'm from Hillsborough,

Why only a six footer. That tractor is plenty large for the seven footer. I bought the GM35-84 several years ago, it works just fine behind my KM454. Specs are here: First Choice Equipment

Note that even though it's only 15% wider, it's 60% heavier. Made of much tougher stuff than the smaller models. Don't know why they consider the anti-scalp roller as an option though. I definitely think it should be standard equipment.

I'm in Chatham County, northeast of Siler City. As for the 7 ft model, I think 6 ft should be plenty enough width. I know my tractor can do a 7 ft mower, but that may be too large to get in and out of tight spaces & between trees around my pond. I'd hate to be side swiping tree trunks with a new mower.

Think about that for a second. A seven foot mower is only six inches wider on each side than is a six footer. And according to the 4220i spec sheet, your rear track is adjustable up to 72" (outside to outside). Folks usually want a mower that is a little wider than their tractor, for mowing up against buildings and fencelines.

And the fact that the GM35-84 is so much stouter than are the smaller models is well worth considering.

I Have a First Choice and it is as good a finish mower as you can get.I have two other kind but they are not as good as the First Choice .

To expand on that, my 45hp tractor has a 66.5" rear track. The straight line swath on a six foot finish mower would only extend 2.75" outside the tire tracks. Can't safely mow at any speed along fencelines and buildings that way. That's why I went up to a seven footer. With 8.75" extending past the tire tracks, I can safely mow much closer to fixed objects.

That's one reason I like the concept of flail mowers, you can offset them. Can you offset a RFM? If you can't, that'd be a nice market opportunity. Say a 76" RFM that was offset 4" to the left . . .
