I may have a better way to keep them away; although not one I'd prefer. At 9 p.m. Wednesday night, my wife was standing at the front door looking out and said, "I think Buster's found a snake." (Buster's our Rat Terrier) I said, "Nah, we've not had any snakes in our yard." But I got a flashlight and went out there, and sure enough, Buster was playing tag with 3' snake. He was quick enough he never got bit when it would strike at him. I'm not sure what kind, but non-poisonous I'm sure. I killed it anyway.
