As a retirement job I started a company to do "Heavy Lifting" for homeowners in the Charlotte area. Bark mulch and topsoil spreading, light grading, garden walls and ornamental gardens. Since I bought the tractor I've put a couple of offers on the table. Well, I have my first grading job on a house.

This is a small job to just spread out a large dirt pile alongside a house and driveway. I had the owner clear out all the construction materials except for the straw bales (those I will move those to the driveway).

It was a full day of work. On site it 8:30, shut off at 3:30. Had a lot of fun learning about the tractor. No pics, too busy!

- 7hrs of non stop running, 5gal of fuel
- If it fit in the bucket, it lifted it. Including 4-5" thick tar chunks from the old driveway
- It fits in a large uhaul trailer for now

In all it was a good job. Some surprises at the bottom of the pile (tar chunks). Estimate about 18yds of fill made to disappear.

I'll be working on my yard over the holidays cleaning out some crepe myrtle stumps. Then when the leaves stop (this year) I'll be getting 12yds of mulch.

Good job! Sounds like you're getting the hang of it. I loved my Max 25 and moved mountains of dirt, mulch and debris with it. Amazed with that little machine. Never did commercial or "for hire" work, but every other house on our street has had a few dozen yards of dirt sculpted by our prior Mighty Max.

It did take me a little while to master the finesse aspect of spreading dirt around yards and moving big piles from one spot to an even depth all around an acre or so sized space. It's not as quick as most people expect the first few times, but once you get the process of bucket loading, and more importantly, box blade loading down, you'll have that kind of job down to 3 hours in no time! You'll often find the major dirt work guys around here don't even have loaders on their machine and just due all the yard spreading and leveling with a box blade only. (The loader is a must in my mind though...)

Pictures are always handy if you have time. It will help you with bids on the next set of jobs. When you get home and study your before and after shots you may have some "aha" moments... It's important to not sell yourself short, and looking at nice clean piles can often come with the surprises you mentioned above that will eat into your margin.

Have fun and be safe!

Thanks. Great advice! This was a learning moment. I now have more experience to properly bid on jobs.

The tractor worked great. No mistake on that decision.
