Kubota B2710
Just got my my first tractor B2710 with 333 hrs.
Im in the market for a rotary-cutter for cutting 5 acres of Colorado dry-land
pairie grass nothing too tuff might hit a rock now and then.
The 2710 operators manual says 48" max. cutting width, witch seems narrow to me. Any imput would be apprecitated.
Thanks

A special welcome, I also own a B2710. I have an old 5' Ford brush hog that pulls fine. I mow midwest pasture grass so it's pretty thick. I've mowed 5' high prairie grass with mine and I can't tell the bush hog is back there. So I'd say you could easily pull a 5' or even 6' hog if you wanted to for what you're mowing. Dry prairie grass is pretty light mowing.

I also have a 5' trail mower (has it's own engine) that I pull offset behind the 5' bush hog, so I get about a 9' cut. It's a little tough to maneuver, almost impossible to back up. But it's great for the open stretches.

Steve, I used to have a 1995 Kubota B7100 and a 48" Bush Hog Squealer rotary cutter, but when I traded up to the 1999 B2710, one of the first things I did was trade up to a 60" rotary cutter. I went with the Howse 500 which is a light weight (and cheaper) rotary cutter, but it served my purposes quite well. In my opinion, Kubota is quite conservative in their recommendations for implements, and personally, I definitely wanted a rotary cutter wider than the outside rear tread of the tractor so I could mow close to fences and other obstacles.

Listen to the guys who have used the B2710. For my part I have a B2400 with a 4' bush hog as Kubota recommended. On my hills it can struggle a little going up some of the slopes and lug down but I have no doubt that on anything that was approaching flat and level, it would handle a light 5 footer easily. With your extra 3 hp and not too tough cutting, I don't think it would be a problem.

I have a BX2660 and a 48" Landpride Rotary Cutter. The horsepower is roughly the same as yours (off the top of my head), but the frame of my tractor is smaller. I've found this is the perfect size, although Kubota "offically" recommends a 42" as maximum.

Be sure to get one big enough to make good time, but not too big to get into the tight spots. I've used mine to put the finishing touches on trails through the bush in which cases I wouldn't want a bigger one. My first job was to clear a bunch of cut lines that were 3-5 years overgrown. For jobs like that I would think you'd want to concentrate the horsepower into a smaller deck size.

I'm very happy with my set up. Never bogged down and cut through more than I could have expected the little tractor to. The Land Pride is a tough unit. I've inadvertantly hit more rocks than I'd care to count. The only result was smaller rocked a a few dings in the blade.

I use a 48" bushog squealer on my b2400. Wish I had a 5 footer. Like Bird I got the 4 footer when I had a b7100 which at 16hp the 4 footer was definitely as wide as you'd want to go. You'll be fine with a 5 footer.

And again, a special welcome to TBN! You did pretty well, I would say. Lots of answers to your first question! Don't forget to post photos of your rig as soon as you get the rotary cutter-Photos are required!

I pulled a 42" Bush Hog behind my old Kubota B5100 (10hp) at the PTO...Never gave me any problems...I suspect like Bird that they are a little conservative with their recommendations...You may consider a PTO overrun clutch too...Congrats and good luck with your new rig and Happy New Year to all.
