Ok got my max 28 hydro home today. (6 hr round trip) I got a 14 Max 28 with 112Hr. FEL and backhoe. My first question is..should the tractor be able to clime a small incline in high range with the weight of the backhoe? If so.. I have a problem... keep in mind I was just driving it around a little to get the feel. First tractor so if that high range is only to be used on the flat, please let me know. I just don't know what to expect? Thanks

No, your tractor should not be able to climb in HST/HIGH with a Backhoe.

HST transmission is like a geared transmission in a tractor or car. High gear for higher speed but low torque. Lower gear for higher torque/greater pulling/climbing power but lower over-the-ground speed.


Take your time, compose unconfused posts. Study your Owner/Operator's Manual.

With the throttle up, in high range with the HST pedal pressed only slightly to moderately, it should climb a moderate incline just fine. If you press the HST pedal all the way down, it won't because that is like shifting a manual transmission into the highest gear....you get speed, but not torque multiplication. It isn't exactly intuitive to let up on the HST pedal to be able to climb better.

Did you throttle up or were you near idle? Beyond that it will depend on the hill and the gear. I'd guess in high 1st you should be able to but you need to rev the engine up.

Thanks Dave. Now that you put it that way??? It did move a little with the peddle only press a small ways in. So I guess it is ok? Again, this is my first tractor so I was thinking the harder I pushed the faster it should go... It almost doesn't move forward on a hill in high but I will try to feather the peddle tomorrow just to see. Low range is fast enough but I'm just playing around and trying to learn the machine. JMH. I had it up between the two lines on the tac. Is that the best RPM to use when just driving it to the next project? Also noticed that the peddle does not return to center and creeps what ever way you were going last. I see the parking break is a "Must" even on the flat in the garage!

HST transfers power with pumps. It takes a few seconds for pumps to slow down when you lift your foot from accelerator.

The rpm for that tractor I'm not sure about. I'd say at least 2000. On the creep part, I have read here that hydros can have this issue. Its usually an adjustment. Also the new peddle might need to wear in. Not sure if the joints can be greased. You might want to look.
