Hi All,

This is both my first post and my first tractor purchase. I am looking at the New Holland class 3 compacts (2310, 2320, 2330). These are the 40, 45, and 50 hp models respectively. I will be purchasing a 250TL NH loader with the machine. I have a couple of questions.

What is a good price for each of these machines? I would probably be taking one off a lot which I've been told would save me about $1500 over having to order one. I've been talking to a dealer and I get the impression he is willing to deal a little to get these tractors off his lot to make room for the "newer" 3040, 3045, and 3050 models (which are identical to the 23xx series). He priced a 2310 with loader to me for $21,200. Is that a good price? The 2320 was offered at $24,800 which seemed a bit of big jump for just 5 hp. I can only assume he is discounting the 2310 more because he is more anxious to move it off the lot. I figure that at his initial price of $21,200 that I might be able to get him to drop to $19000 - $19500 (maybe!). After leaving the dealer I got to thinking more about the tractor and I really feel the 50hp 2330 (3050) is the tractor I should buy. If I was to offer $22,500 for the 2330 would the dealer consider it ( or would they all gather round and start pointing and laughing  ). Would $22,500 be too aggressive a offer on my part? Yeah, I know, throw it at the dealer and see what they do. I just wanted your guys input since there are many of you here with a lot of buying experience.

Do tractor dealers "work" like car dealers in that they have a fair amount of price negotiation lattitude. For instance, if a car dealer shows you his "invoice" and sells you the car for that price, he is still making money because of "factory holdbacks". There are a number of sites on the Internet which give a "tutorial" on how to buy a car from a dealership. If you apply what you learned from the "tutorial" you can usually get a pretty good or at least fair deal ( well, one likes to think so anyway ). I looked for similar "tutoriials" on how to price and buy a tractor but to no avail. Do tractor dealerships operate similarly? One frustration I have is that I can't even find MSRP prices for these tractors as a reference / starting point. And try as I might, I sure as heck couldn't find a "window sticker" on the tractor :) Anyone have any insights into how to determine if you are getting a good price / deal or not?

I am in the N. Arkansas / S. Missouri area.

Thanks in advance for you feedback.

Are you talking hydro transmission or a shuttle shift? I am looking at a shuttle shift 2310 also, original quote from my dealer was 22,000. I have a trade so dealer is working on a price. I personally didn't like the hydro, thought it whined too much and was jerky. Haven't driven the shuttle shift in the New Holland yet. I am also considering an Agco. I really like their power shift it is a little smaller framed tractor I really like the dealer only about ten miles away.

I guess the transmission type would affect pricing, huh! :) Anyway, to answer your question, it is a 12x12 synch-shuttle.

One thing I am going to do this week is contact some other dealerships and get quotes so I can "comparison" shop (I've talked to two so far). That should give me some idea. Still, any insight that anyone can shed on tractor buying / pricing would be appreciated.

New Holland doesn't do it, but Deere and Kubota (and others?) have areas on their websites where you can build a tractor with options and obtain an MSRP. Might be something to compare to.

SouthernX, I'm a relatively new poster, but I have extensive experience with New Holland tractors. In fact, they sometimes still seem like "Fords."

With that in mind, please take the time to bounce your deal off of me.

Most dealers are THRILLED to make 8% - 9% on a blue tractor deal. I've done them for 4%. (And I still have a job!)

Seriously, by the time a dealer pays New Holland and the inbound trucking company, if there's $2500 left to pay the guy who sets it up and delivers it, then there's something to call "profit" and the salesman can keep his job.

People are getting really hard on dealers. Do they not want us to be here 5 years from now when they need a bearing?

By the way, don't shop yourself silly. I've been in contact with many nice young men looking for the perfect machine. Which brand? Which model? Equipped how? Financed which way? What if I put more down? Throw in a bush hog? They literally have 20 different scenarios just from me, nevermind the Deere dealer, the Kubota dealer, etc.

Find a store you like where you feel comfortable and the salespeople are trustworthy.

You can go to the Case IH website and build a farmall 40/45/50. Same tractor minus the supersteer. Here's a direct link to the machine builder page.
