Hello All...

Not sure if this is the right discussion board for this type of question, so I'll make it brief in case I need to post this elsewhere...

Have an 8N now and would like to have some more HP...Been looking hard for an 861 but they don't seem to be as available as the 8N's...I don't want a new tractor as I like the old ones better...Something around 50 HP (or higher)...

I don't know much about the 2000-3000-5000 Ford series...Is this a tractor series worth considering..??? Mostly want to do bush-hogging and mowing, have a live PTO and the just plain ol' OOMPH of having some additional HP on hand...Have 70 acres but plan on maintaining about 20-25 of those...

Again, I'll wait for a response to see if this is the right place for a recommendation for/on an old tractor, preferably Ford...Also open to any other manufacturer if a good recommendation goes that way...

Thanks in advance for any and all responses... :)

If you want 50 hp then you will need a 4000 series or higher.

I have a 1964 Massey Fergusion 135 diesel (45 hp engine, 37 hp pto) that I bought in July06 for $3600 in good running condition. A tractor this size would handle a 6-ft brush hog easily for your mowing chores on 20 acres or so.

Other possibilities under $5000:

Ford 4000 (46 hp pto)
Massey Ferguson 165 (52 hp pto)
IH 560 (59 hp pto).
Case 830 (64 hp pto)

I have a ford 4000 with a loader, I'm happy with it but it seems to big to do the small stuff around the house but yet it's to small for the big stuff I want to do. never satisfied:)

Don't miss you probably are going from gas to diesel in this also. Your probably will find more torque with the diesel but also smaller RPM range. Pay attention to the gears as you will probably want more than four speeds. Especially if running heavy pto work. Probably will see two range transmissions.

Thanks to all that have replied with the excellent advice...

While doing some more looking today I have an opportunity to buy a gas Ford 860 ($2,600) or a gas 63' Ford 4000 w/PS for $3,600. Both are in my price range and from preliminary phone conversations appear to be in about the same shape...

Any preferences one way or the other from members out there..??? From my understanding thery both have the 172 ci engine and one has PS and the other does not...Both have live PTO's and 5 speed transmissions...

Any and all comments would be appreciated on these two tractors... I have no problem with saving some money...:)

Thanks again for the help...

Rick

A pre 65 4000 with live pto / 5spd is for all intents and purposes.. an 861.. which is pretty much an 860 with the addition of a gas gauge and charge lamp instead of an ammeter.

Up to you to decide if the ps is worth the 1000$ lus being a few years newer.

IMHO... both are 'good deals'.

I have an 850 and get lots of wok out of it.

A 3 cyl post 65 4000 or a larger 5000 ( 70 hp ) may be in more of a range for your large acerage.

all depends on how small / big your tractor needs to be for maneuverability.

I bought a '64 4000 w/loader to replace my 8N. It was a great tractor and a vast improvement over the 8N. Wish I could have kept them both. The loader required PS, but I would consider it a plus on any tractor, although I don't know if it was worth an extra $1K. My 4000 also had a great seat, with a back and arms that made long days of mowing much more comfortable.

Bottom line is I think both tractors would work for you, but I'm a real 4000 fan.

Good luck,

Thanks for all the top notch recommendations...I appreciate it very much...

Thanks to input from soundguy, I have expanded the search to include a Ford 5000...

One last thing, and kind of a loaded question, but can information be provided on the 5000 on a good, better and best cost basis...Probably more interested in the diesel than the gas version on a tractor that size...

Sure seems to be a lot of knowledge here...I'll advise whenever I get down to making a purchase...

Regards,

Rick

I believe you can find 5xxx models in about a 5000-8000$ range.. I'd include 5600 in that look as well.. pretty much a newer 5000 with better hyd's.

I found a good average 5000 that needed minor tlc and lots of body work for 6500$.
