Had the chance this weekend to use a borrowed PHD with a 12" auger on my JD4100.

Thanks to all the safety postings here, and those in the Attachments Forum, I knew enough to keep everyone away and operate it in a safe manner. Also knew to keep raising the auger to clear the hole and keep it from screwing into the ground.

Sorry if you were expecting to read about an accident /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Thanks!

Gary, the only reason to watch auto racing is for the accidents and of course the only reason to watch hockey is for the fights! The only reason to read the safety forum is for the gore and guts stories???

Good to hear that there was no PHD related incident on your property! I keep a 50' rule when using a PHD. I've been criticized for that here on TBN saying it is too cautious, but I figure a dog or a running kid can close that gap in about 3 or 4 seconds when they are running, so I generally don't want them around when I operate the PHD. I doubt I could begin to react in any less time than a few seconds.

A PHD is a great invention and a very useful tool.

I'd probably agree that 50' might be a little far, but then I've never seen anyone wrapped around an auger either! And I hope I never do.

I kept them back about 20'. But further could be better.

I was kind of wondering how my little JD4100 would handle the 12" auger, but it was no problem at all.

Gary, I would say that my 50' rule does not apply to people who are helping me and know what the heck is going on. I think I've only used the PHD one time with a helper, and he also owns equipment, is more experienced than I am and knows to stand back a safe distance. But then there are folks like my brother. He is darn near a genius, but when it comes to tools, he just doesn't quite get it. I actually worry when he has duct tape in his hand. No way I would trust him within 100' of a spinning auger, in fact I shutter at the thought. I just have visions of a giant cotton candy machine when I think of a tractor, an PHD and my brother!

Are you saying that your brother got the brains and you were cheated out of the "looks"????? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
