We just got a King Kutter 5' tiller and used it for the first time tonight. Boy is it fun, I was amazed at how easily it chewed everything up. We need to adjust it a bit to get it to dig a little deeper, but boy is it fun. It will make planting corn and a nice little garden this year.

You don't need to do any adjusting to till deeper, just go over it again, than again, every time the skid shoes dig in deeper.

I figured that, but I also think I need to shorten up the top link, the shoe wasn't level. Does that make any sense?

Make sense but isn't absolutely necessary. I set my back gate about a third of the way up. It I want rough tilled ground, I use my hydraulic top link to tilt the tiller forward and lift the back gate. It I want it to smooth as I go, I tilt the tiller rearward. I just make sure I don't get the angle so extreme that my driveline or U-joints are in a bind.
AS far as depth, yeah, go over it a couple of times. I keep my skid shoes all the way up just FYI. I wouldn't even have them on the tiller except for the fact that they keep the gearbox and bearing end from being a skid. Of course I understand the fact that you may not have a hydraulic top link.

Does this make any sense? :D

PS
as far as the skip plates go. I wish they were just a rounded curve and not flat at all. As I said, I just look at mine as protection for the gearbox

Yep, makes perfect sense. The shoes are in the second from the bottom setting, as set when we got it, so that will need to be put to the bottom level. We don't have a hydraulic top link, but I think we will just try to get it as level as possible and go over the space as needed.

Good tip on tilting the tiller making it smoother or rougher. Thanks.

As far as tilt forward or backward, don't think that matters mush as far as the tilling, thing that does matter is when you raise it,with it running, that angle can put your u joints in bind, thats why I have mine tilted forward, and yeah, have shoes all the way up.

The only thing the shoes do,is keep it from just floping on ground and being hard on gear box, plus when you take it off, gives you a flat part to set it down so's it won't fall forward or backward.

I find that with my KK5' it works best with the shoes set just as they were from the factory. (second hole) I found that when I set my shoes as deep as they go it had more of a tendency to slip the clutch. I just run a couple of passes if I want it to go deeper.

Them slip clutchs are an experience alright. But,if mine sliped just cause of it working hard or etc,[no rocks, roots, etc],would tighten the bolts up a tad.
