Yesterday I welded the thumb on my BH. It is a mt830 from Excavator thumbs.com. I had little trouble mounting it and trimming about 2 inches off the jaws to fit the bucket better.
I used it today lifting dead fall loags out of a drainage ditch today. It will take some getting used to and right away I did feel a hydraulic one would be even nicer. It performed well and allowed me to reach down into the ditch about 4 ft. below grade and lift many large logs out. I also used it to grapple 5 small 3 inch maples and lift them right out with little ground disturbance and very fast results. Much more to do with it before I report any other pros or cons.
The unit is well built and heavy. Some observations on it's design: It does not need a 2 inch pin at the pivot- just adds weight. It could use more of an angle option than the about 115* it has- a 145* would find more functions.
Hair type or flip over type keeper pins shoud be used for the main pin retainers rather than the bolts- faster and easier no tool changes.
I am looking forward to using this thumb and finding many other uses.
Would like to here from others on pros and cons as well as creative uses they may have found.
Oh yes, I will try to take a digital picture and post it. Not something I know how to do at this time. I do like to see the pictures others have taken and should post some of my own if I can manage to figure out how. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
