Took delivery of a Farmi 501 winch and used it for the first time. Very useful piece of equipment.

Here's a pic skidding out a blown down hemlock.

One more with a lot of brush in the FEL. It held a lot more than I thought when I cleaned up the skidding area.

Cool. Looks like you'll get an awful lot done with that. Thanks for the pics, I was wondering how they do. John

That looks like a nice set-up. Is the winch PTO driven or hydraulic?

I have a JL 250 which I purchased brand new some 25 years ago and I use it very frequently. Last weekend I cut several tress and pulled them to the tractor and trailer to cut them up for fire wood.

You will find that winch very useful. Just remember to pull as straight behind the tractor as possible, too much side pull will twist the 3PH arms to the point of breaking, I know. The winch will have enough pull to lift the front of the tractor off the ground with ease, don't tip it over.

In a few days you will wonder how you ever did without one. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It's PTO driven and has about 11,000lb pull capacity. The specs are on a few Farmi dealer websites. The 501 is "medium duty" with a 1/2" cable. I found it difficult to drag out hard-to-reach blow-downs with chains attached to the tractor. These logging winches (there are several makes available) allow you to lower the blade which anchors in the ground while the cable pulls the log. Once the log reaches the blade, you attch the skidding chain to the top of the blade, lift with 3pth and go.

The reason I'm posting is because I looked up every post on logging winches and see there's room for more pics and info. It's an expensive tool and before I committed to buying it, I wanted to read every post and see every pic about it. I walked every inch of my land and assessed how much use I could get out of it and possible other uses. I'm brand new to this, so there's plenty to learn. So for what it's worth, I'm glad I went for it. Another consideration for those of you thinking about it...these winches have few moving parts, are easy to maintain and are reliable...and they will last you until you're too old to ride your tractor! If any of you out there are experienced users of logging winches, please share some useful tips, past threads, pics, or war-stories that your wife's tired of hearing about! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Great looking set up! I bought the Tajfun winch about a month ago and love it. It was between that and the Farmi. I thought that the Tajfun was a little better deal for me in the 6,600lb pull class. The tips I would offer are always make your pulls straight, inline with the tractor, and if in snow or soft ground back up a bit after you drop the blade to help it dig in. There is also a concern about pull force being applied to the top link of the 3pt hitch. I got the HD top link bracket from my Kubota dealer and will install it as soon as I can. So always pull as low on the winch as you can and as engine66 said winch up the logs and then hook to the transport notches on the top of the blade.
