Fishing.

Been there and done all that with 6 of the 7 grandchildren. Unfortunately the last grand daughter is not living close by now so I will likely miss out on most of that with her. She isn't into grandma and grandpa like the other grandchildren and prefers to hold to mama's leg which is likely the outcome of being the first child of my sons second wife and therefore she got coddled a lot and none of the grandparents were around much so she is quite shy around everyone but her half sister.

My daughter was really proud of me last night when the grand opened up the container and started introducing the fishing worms,...... Which she had named........ And plans on keeping in her room.

I wonder who gave her that idea?

Ah, the joys of being a grandparent.

This sounds like a great day.

I need to get my daughters old pink Zebco out of the shed and see if it still works. My granddaughter is 8 and would love to go fishing.

My six year old daughter wore out her little Zebco combo (28 years ago), so we got her a better one for the next year. She also picked out a card of cheap Chinese spoons. She was dawdling the first morning we were to go fishing the next year, so I walked to the beach without her, rigging her rod with one of those spoons. Sure 'nuff, she ran up 3 minutes later and then tried her first cast with the new rod. It plunked into the lake about 2 feet in front of her. I asked if she needed some help with the new rod. She asked if it worked like the old one. I nodded, and she sent her next cast smoothly out into the cove. 5 seconds later she was fighting a nice fish. She finally pulled the bass (also about a pound and 1/2) up onto the beach. She looked at me and said "did I do it right, Dad?". She is still a smart alec.

I taught all my boys to fish and only one of my daughters grew to enjoy fishing. From time to time I get pics of their catches with their smiling faces delivered to my phone. They are all grown now and are teaching my grandchildren the joys and frustrations of fishing. The joys continue for me as they are always telling me how grateful they are for being taught to fish and that they will never go hungry because of the lessons learned.

Took my soon to be seven year old granddaughter fishing this morning. She caught six small bluegill. THEN her bobber went under and didn't come up. The fish jumped clear of the water twice. Don't know who was more exited, me or her. Her little reel wouldn't pull it in and I had to grab the line. Anyway it was a bass that probably weighed a pound and a half. That was it. She was done for the day. Couldn't top that.

All she has talked about the past hour was going back and catching the fishes again. Guess I'm on for a new rod and reel at Wal-Mart.

Now it's off to McDonalds for chicken nuggets, then to Wal-Mart for the fishing gear. Then we have to practice casting in the front yard so next time granddaddy can fish.

Oh yeah, all the fishing worms we dug up are named and she plans on keeping them all summer as pets. Her mom is going to be proud of me for that. But what are granddaddys for if not to teach youngsters how to do things while disguising the lessons as fun.

Never let them name the bait!!!

Memories to cherish, life is good. I've never been good at fishing, don't like waiting around. Where I work they used to let you fish in the private pond if you threw them back. We brought my kids when they were between 4 and 10. Little Zebco's with stuff like Micky Mouse on them. A rubber worm with a hook and they would pull what I think was bass in cast after cast. So many fish in there, so fun to watch. :)

My daughter, who has celebrated the seventh anniversary of her 39th birthday always asks, "Pops, can we go fishing?" Drives her mother nuts that she'd rather fish with me than shop with her. I still remember my oldest granddaughter, at four years old saying "Oh my God! It's a whale!" when she hooked her first ever fish, about an 11 inch yellow perch. I wish they lived closer so we could spend more time together but I do understand that they have families of their own and life goes on...........
