Just thought I'd share this experience.

When we put up our first fence on this property we used the clay that came out of the hole to backfill. It worked well enough on most posts but we did have one that got loose after a few years. The next fence section we put up we used peagravel for backfill and it seemed to work alot better. Those posts have remained rock solid since we put them in.

A couple of months ago I decided to fix that loose post with some peagravel. The post takes a lot of abuse from the automatic latch thats on it. The gate slams into the post several times a day in order to close the latch. I pushed the post sideways with the FEL on the Kubota and filled in next to the post with peagravel. Then I pulled the post back with the FEL and filled in the other side of the hole. The post has remained very solid since I fixed it and I don't anticipate it loosening up again. It was an easy fix to an anoying problem.
