Fixing paint chips and small rust spots

What is the best way to fix paint chips and small rust spots. I start with a bit of sanding then I use small art brushes and fill in a dab of primer, then when dry, paint over with the color needed. I was thinking of wiping with phosphoric acid first (rust converter) then sand, clean with acetone, and paint. These are all little spots from rock chips, etc.

On longer scratches I have taped along the edge and use spray to cover. usually using Rustolium products to do this from HD or the local hardware place.

Is there a better way?

Better? I doubt it. Sounds like you do fine. I like using RustOleum because it contains rust converters in it. I keep rattle cans and brush cans around in the colors I need for touchups.

I have found that for really small chips that are rusted, I can use the tip of a drywall screw to scrape all the rust down to bare metal. Also use it to scrape away any loose paint. So I am left with a chip that's down to bare metal and surrounded by all good paint. Then fill it in with the paint/primer of your choice. Artist brush works well, but sometimes the tip of a toothpick can be dipped in the paint and then stuck in the chip to fill it. Have also gotten some touchup paint that's in a pen, which you can use to "flow" into the chip to fill it.

I like your suggestions as I have used them all . One other thing I have tried is the Q-tip to put the rust converter on. I let it do its thing and then check for loose paint. Q tip is lousy for paint as it leaves fibers, however I found a set of foam art brushes at Walt-Mart. Set has small shapes (round, square, triangles) that do work well.
