We have used an Alamo AM 5000 for the last 10 years or so, but recently there has been a push for a flail mower, mostly for safety reasons. Yesterday I visited the local tractor dealer (Kubota) and the boy working there said that he did not think the PTO shaft turned enough RPMs at a slow enough ground speed to power a flail mower. Has anybody had any experience to confirm or contradict his opinion?

My three Flail mowers require 540. Warning do not talk to the kid washing tractors in the lot. Flail mowers are not like tillers,and do not need to run at really low speeds. The state (Ohio) still uses 15 foot bush hogs to mow along the state routes. Most counties use flail mowers for parks and public areas. Look here at the flail mower link,"Lets talk flail mowers". It will take several hours. They cost a good bit new, mine are from a orchard and government use.
By boy I meant man. He usually works the counter in a small tractor dealership and always seems pretty knowledgeable. He was worried about the opposite, that the rotational speed of the mower in 2nd gear would not be fast enough to efficiently use a flail mower. He believed that on the To-30 the PTO was driven off the transmission output, ie, it spun different speeds depending on what gear you are in.I have been making my way through the post in a nice leisurely pace (about p 37). I didn't see anything that referenced this particular issue.
