I have also posted this in the oil section too as I was sure which section would work best... hope that's ok?

Have just bought a used Kubota flail mower and will service it before using for the first time.

The recommended gearbox oil is SAE 90 oil. I'm a big fan of synthetic oil and have Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil around for other uses, and I'm thinking of using this in the flail gearbox.

Is this a good idea, any opinions out there?

Synthetic is overkill but it cannot hurt. I think you could put just about any oil in that gearbox including grease and it would function. It is not a high precision device.

JD cornhead grease is a good option for a lot of gearboxes - it is flowable when it warms up, but thicker so it doesn't run out of worn seals. Don't bother with oil any more, it just runs out the poor seals we get any more.
