Just picked this up yesterday from a junk yard, but I can't find a badge on it anywhere with a brand or model number. It has a John Deere belt on it though.

Any ideas from the flail masters out there? I can get other pictures if it would help.

thanks

I am almost positive it is a mott mower: remove the belt guard and look there for an ID tag or on the mower hood at the corners.

The mott mowers are the ones sent to junk yards because the Mott Mower company is no longer in business thanks to ALAMO to kill thier competion

Dont sell it or scrap it as you can still buy mower knives, knive grinders, bearings, rotors, belts, pulleys from flailmaster.com

The knives are not that expensive and last a long time, we are still using 30 plus year old knives on our matthews flail mower.

You have the safest type of mower you can own as far as being able to mow with no worries about hitting and throwing anything.

Did you happen to see any flail mowers with gas engines that were still in one piece?

The fastest way to mow with a flail mower is mowing in a circle as there is no braking or stopping to turn and you simply overlap if the grass is tall-but the slower you move forward whole mowing the knives cut faster and finer with very little grass showing and its is gone in a few days- if you have sone grass left you can go over it again with lttle effort and chop it up.

The full width roller eliminates scalping too. just be sure to lock the implement control valve closed to avoid it dropping unexpectedly in float while you mow.

You have a forever mower my friend and dont let it go!!! **** you dont even have clean it unless you have to change bearings because they run so clean with no grass build up because of the suction created by the knife rotor.

Ok. Yeah, I have no plans on getting rid of it. I've been looking for a flail for some time, but they aren't so common around here. The blades are in usable shape for now. We'll replace some sheet metal on the top there and I've cut a piece of rubber to go along the back. Had to order a new bearing for the rotor, but other than that it works. Given the price of a new one, I figured this one was worth a shot for $200.

I didn't see any that had a gas motor. This yard was mainly just old 3pt implements.

Thanks for the help!

I know it doesn't look like my JD 25a, if that helps. A search on google images says Leonz is probably correct.

Replace both bearings for my own sanity please!, as the second one is not to far behind it.

Why would you not want the 3pt hitch to float while mowing with a flail mower? Maybe I'm making a wrong assumption here, but I've been mowing with a 6' Mott flail for a few years now and the 3pt hitch is always in float. The top linkage on the flail doesn't "float" like on a "bush hog" rotary mower does, so you want the 3pt to float and the mower will follow the ground contours.

All depends on his land and how fast he is traveling forward or reverse and whether any depressions in the land he has are shallow or deep as the roller is a paper weight essentially in FLOAT and if it catches just the right way in a decline the rotor will dig in with the knives.

They bang very hard when in float and it reaches bottom with the three point.

Other than that I love my flail mower.

I guess you're mowing some pretty rough land. If it's at all flat, let'er float.
