Flail mower required HP question

So I'm in the market for a Flail mower and have been looking hard at the Caroni TM1900 which is a 6' mower rated at 30-60 HP and weights 650 Lbs.

I have noticed that all flail mowers irregardless of brand start out at minimum 30 HP ratings.

My JD 870 is rated at 28 HP so the question is will a flail mower work behind this tractor?

my 2520 is like 25-26 HP.
I have a 5 foot flail on it, and it works great, but it struggles a bit in really tall thick grass. I would put a 5 footer on your tractor, unless you only plan on cutting thin dry easy cutting grass. Mine is river-bottom, and flood plane, so it cuts hard as heck. I'd never be able to turn a 6 footer, muchless carry it. :laughing:

I don't know if this will help or not, but I pull a 90" cut 1250lb. flail behind a 49HP, 37 PTO tractor and it does it pretty easily.

I have a TM1900 on a 41hp Kioti. I would certainly consider using a TM1900 on a 28hp tractor for routine and regular pasture mowing etc. I would probably not use it on that size mower if my main task was bush hogging or once per year pasture mowing unless I was willing to go slower. I have no doubt that 28hp is basically OK as I run my 41hp tractor about 400-500 RPM below PTO speed most of the time and it cuts fine. I'd guess the tractor is putting out low thirties HP for most of my mowing.

Hey DennisH,

I have a 5ft Alamo Flail mower on my JD790 which is rated at 27 hp. It does a great job and I can make some pretty good time with it. In the thick stuff, I sometimes have to go slow.
If you're going to keep ahead of the growth, I'd think a 6ft would work just fine. If you're going to be knocking down brushy type stuff, you'll be going slow anyway.
