I just bougt this flail mower at an amazing price and I'm not sure of the model. I'm thinking it's a Mott. Any ideas? Also, the PTO shaft that came with it doesn't fit my John Deere 4100. I went to Tractor Supply to get an adapter and they didn't have anything close to the size. Does any one have any ideas on how I can get the mower to work on my truck.

You need a pto shaft w/slip clutch. or you break the tractor or mower

tractor looks like 1-3/8" 6 spline pto shaft ( rusty)

I have never seen a slip clutch on a flail mower.

I haven't used the pto on this tractor yet. I was looking forward to using the flail mower on it. I got the tractor used and the sheet metal on her is in really sad shape. Some people just don't know how to take care of their machines! I've been trying to restore her.

That is quite odd. How wide is the mower? What would that PTO shaft have been meant to go on? We have all manner of little out in the country repair and welding places that could fix you up or even dealers that get into a lot of odd stuff and fabrication. Have you no one around like that?

Spray some PB blaster or something on the tractor PTO to sit and soak while you figure this thing out

I believe it is quite common to have slip clutches on flail mowers. Mine came with one. It also came with an over-running clutch which lets the rotor spin down naturally rather than stopping suddenly.

I have to look now. I don't think my "PERFECT" ditch mower by VanWamel has a clutch either.

Maybe yours has a shear bolt...

The mower has ten pound or so hammers and I'm actually surprised it doesn't have an over running clutch for so much spinning mass. Unless I never noticed it.

Yup, my Chinese verge mower has an overruning clutch too.

I need something that's 6 spline to 10 spline. It's been hard trying to find something that matches up. Maybe that's why I got such a good deal on the mower.

21 spline is for a 1000 RPM PTO.

6 spline is for a 540 RPM PTO.

If you use an adapter it might not spin fast enough to cut well.

You need to figure out the ratio of the gearbox.

Also, it does not look like the old Mott that I had:

Thanks xfaxman. what tractor has a 1000 rpm pto? that seems really fast. Do you know what/where I can get the attachment? I need to try it since I own it now.

I just went through my old emails and the old owner said that it used to be attached to a international cub lo-boy 154 tractor. Little research and the tractor has 1600 rpm pto and counter clockwise. That's not good!

The new holland tn has a reversible shaft one end runs 540 the other 1000. Actually a lot of the larger tractors allow you to do this. Most of the newer larger tractors have a selection lever between 1000 or 540 rpm.
