My bush hog is almost gone and needs to be replaced. I was thinking about replacing it with a flail type mower.

I have about 10 acs that is clean and needs to be cut, no heavy brush. I was thinking about using my finish mower but then I would have to cut it every week. I sometimes let it go for a month and that too much for the finish mower. This is the only real reason that I have the bush for.

Can I use a Flail type for this? Will it give a cleaner cut than the bush hog? If I need to clear out brush can I use a Flail.

I also plan on purchasing another 20 acs in the near future, would this be too much for a flail mower? My tractor is a New Holland TC40DA (40 HP).

Thanks for your help.

I think you can use the flail mower for this type of cutting. Might need to set it so it does not cut as low. Also, last year there was a might long discussion on flail mowers. You might want to research this on this site.

I use the bush hog for rough pasture cutting and the flail mower for a finished look around the house. Hope this help.

Wally, if you have never used a flail cutter you need to know there are different style of cutters (not sure all names or proper names, but some are called hammers and knives). Those will affect what it can and will cut and how well. With right flail cutter you would be fine. Now that I have began the reply can not see where you are. Think NC. If you are near Agri Supply they carry a low price line of flail cutters.

I cut fields just as you are describing with a Caroni TM1900 (6ft) I got from AgriSupply in NC. I have found it to be great in this application and also for bush hogging. I cut about 15 acres three or four times a season using a similar tractor (Kioti DK40se) with no issues. I usually run the engine at about 2100rpm which is lower than PTO rated. In heavy areas I go up closer to full PTO speed.
