I have a 4 D-cell Magnalite.

I once had reason to have the local Sheriff out (dont ask me about the 12 gauge wire some yahoo strung across the road at neck height /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif )

Anyway, was dark and the Sheriff met me at the place of the wire (after I'd cut it down). I had my trusty light out ever so proud that I had a "nice" flashlight... then click.. he turned his on. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

only 1 word.. WOW. His was smaller than mine, like maybe a 3 d-cell, yet his beam was MUCH MUCH brighter & stronger. What gives?

Mine was new, good batteries. I asked him about his, all he came up with was it was rechargable.

His LOOKED like mine, though 1 D-cell shorter, yet was significantly brighter.

What's the scoop on getting a flashlight like these that really puts out the light? We live at the end of the road (literally) and when the power goes out, need a good flashlight. Ok, I admit mine is "good"... I'm just envious of his being so much brighter /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I would suspect that he has the Maglite rechargable system, it seems to be the most popular.
It is an excellant lite, the last time I checked it was in the $100 range. here is a link to one website that I found with a quick random search.

WOW !!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I just checked the price of the Magcharger on the website that I posted the link to and they want $194 for it. I guess it has been a long time since I checked. Now I really do wish I had bought one years ago. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hey - $194 isn't too much (when somebody else - i.e. taxpayers - are paying) /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.
Remember the $600 hammers and $25,000 toilet seats.

It might have been an LED flashlight. Don't know much about them but I did see one in a catalog recently /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Might try changing the bulb in your light. Make sure it is a krypton(sp). They have been out a few years and make a difference.

I have one of the rechargeable Mags in my truck and it does work great. I got it through my local napa store.

I have one of those rechargable 1,000,000 candlepower flashlights - they cost $15 to $20. Extremely strong - I can shine it on something 600 yards away (that's the length of my front yard, so that's the longest that I've tried it).

Full charge will last about 45 minutes with the light on all of the time (I used it one winter as a rear light on my tractor).

It seems to stay charged up quite a long time beteween uses; I've never had it run down, but charge it up every month or so as a precaution.

It's large, so it won't fit in tiny places, but you probably would never use a powerful light in tiny places anyway.

You should look into these.

Richard.

Is it possible that the man had the Ultrastinger lite made by Streamlight? I have a few of them myself and it just torches away my old Mag lights. The Ultrastinger goes at 75,000 candlepower and you won't believe how light they are. And they are rechagerable, comes with an AC AND DC charger. The police use the smaller model, very bright but handier to pack on a belt.

I read my post and it sounds like I'm their company rep, not so, I'm just glad a friend who is a cop turned me onto them.

I gotta admit my ignorance, I never knew there was much more to flashlights than the maglites at home depot/other.

I DID get one of those krypton bulbs, seems that is what I already had. On further looking, I see "mine" is rated at something like 24,000 candel power... at least I now have a reference point.

Thanks

Richard
