My wife and I have been battling pest flys for a couple weeks now. We live in Louisiana, just below the Mississippi line and have never had flies this bad. Are any of you having them in excess like us? What do you do to control them? We are not dirty people, live in a very rural area so critters are not uncommon, especially flies. We have never had them this bad- we kill 10-15 a day in our house. We were wondering if it is a bad year for them...or us for that matter.

The mosquito is the state bird here...we have tried several things for these flies, but they keep on coming back. We do not leave food out, wash the carport and patio once a week, etc...

I wondered who had my flies.

They are down-trending lately, but for several years I battled cluster flies in my garage. Same as you, no food, feed, animals, etc.; they just liked the place. I started spraying permethrin when they were at their peak season, late summer, early fall. That has a residual contact effect for two weeks or so. Don't know if that would be good to do inside living quarters. It did make a mess on the windows which is where the flies would spend their time, so I sprayed the windows.

Add: I have never tried the powdered egg shell traps that can be hung in a window.

Got cattle near by? This time of year flies population expands. They hatch in cow poop. Then fly around looking for food sources.

Yes, lots of cattle and in speaking with my wife I remembered they are using chicken litter now for fertilizer, which may explain the increase. We also have 10 horses. We live in the middle of 8500 acres of cattle and timber farms. The cows are about 1500-2000 feet away at times. We have never had flies this bad though, especially indoors.

when there were cows here on the farm. we used fly traps. was like a 1 to 2 gallon clear plastic jug, and the lid had a funky funnel like thing on top of it. were flies would fly in, but were to stupid to figure out how to fly back out. ya put a little bit of water and 'stink bait" in it. and it would attract the flies. it worked the best, once there was about 1 to 2 inches of dead flies on the bottom of it. with the summer sun hitting it. it just turned (all the dead flies) into a composting heap inside of it. and about that time it would suddenly fill nearly up to the top within a day or 2. then you would dump all the dead flies out, wait another 1 to 2 weeks till it got back up to 1 to 2 inches of dead flies to start everything over again.

with above said, last month flies have been pretty bad here, i normally leave sliding glass door cracked enough to let dogs run free in/out of house. and flies just keep pouring in.

granted for me, it has been cloudy over cast to non stop rain, right at the house (drive 1/2 mile and completely different story) and i think most of the flies coming in, are trying to find cover. vs staying out and letting birds and other predators eating them.

since there not enough flys around for the jug fly traps, i am tempted to get some of them "glue string fly traps" and hang a few around.

raid fly spray, gets rather expensive, and my arms and legs, including my top of my head is starting to get painful from using the fly swatter and hitting myself trying to kill the flies.

by nice if there was a "farmer version" of the DIY 5 gallon bucket mouse trap. but for flies!

5 gallon bucket, drill 2 holes up near top. take a metal can or plastic jar (peanut better, can goods you get from store) and poke a hole in bottom and top. put a wire through hole in bucket, push wire through can/jar, push wire through other hole on bucket. make it so can/jar can spin freely and easily. spread some peanut butter on the can/jar making sure it is not top heavy and freely spins. place a couple boards (err mice ramps) from floor to edge of bucket. add a few inches of water in bottom of bucket. come back in a day or 2. and find drown dead mice in it! mice climb up ramp, get on can/jar, can/jar spins and they loose footing, and drop into water and they drown. and it just keeps on going, no reseting of trap beyond dumping out the multi dead mice it catches.
