Can anyone give me some guidance on FEL controls with a float setting?

99% of the time the float position is one step further forward from the "down" position.

It takes off all hydraulic pressure from the "up" and "down" function so the bucket will float over the ground - hence the name. The curl function still works.

It can be used for backdragging and smoothing soil and/or gravel. Those that use it for snow removal (like in Alaska) prefer it since it allows the 4 wheels to stay on the ground for more bite when in 4WD. I've never done snow removal so take it for what it is worth.

Others with more experience will be around soon to elaborate.

On my JD 4410 the float is push through down. You'll feel resistance then it slips further forward into float. I reall only use it with my front mounted snow blower so that it can follow the contours of the driveway better. It allows the blower to climb the hill before the front wheels reach it. I don't use float for loader work as I ussually have the box blade on when using the loader and that is better for leveling then back blade. I have used float when using forks to pick up pallets. I know they'll be flat on the ground as I drive towards only having to think about lining up not on the position of the forks.

My current FEL control does not have a float position. What do I need to know before I go looking for one. Does it require any additional connections, ect...?

It's a different type of valve internally, doesn't require any additional connections. You could buy an aftermarket valve for probably a few hundred bucks, but it's likely to be non-trivial to change the valve on a factory setup: none of the holes will line up, hoses probably won't be the right length so you'll need new ones, connectors probably won't be right on the hoses, etc. Lots of little details that will take a good bit of work to get around and will nickel and dime you. You might look for a different FEL that comes with a float position, then sell yours to recover some of the money.
